5 SPAs 5 Days: Siam

Sun December 21, 2014

What a marathon of bliss this has been!  From a traditional Thai house to a chic high-rise, to an award-winning boutique and Japanese “submersion,” the 5 SPAs in 5 Days mission succeeded on all fronts.  But I’m most thrilled to share scenes from the selection taking the fifth and final spot for the week.  True enough it was a sheer triumph in spa going, but the setting a true feat in design…

The Siam Hotel in Bangkok was realised by the multiple award winning, internationally renowned interiors and landscape designer and architect, Bill Bensley.  Originally from California, Bensley has been at home in Southeast Asia since 1984, when a fortuitous introduction at Harvard grad school set him on a course to an incomparable career.  In the thirty years since, with headquarters in Bangkok Thailand and Bali Indonesia, he’s accomplished a colossal register of the most indescribably stunning and breathtaking hotels and resorts across Asia and around the world, and garnered global accolades too many to chronicle.  A couple of his noteworthy nods:

Travel & Leisure’s Top 10 Asian Resorts (5 of 10 are Bensley designed)   Architectural Digest Top 100  TIME Design 100 (Top 5 Hospitality Designers in the World)   Trip Advisor 2014 #1 Hotel In the World (Four Seasons Hualalai, Hawaii)

Here’s what happened on Spa Day at The Siam:

Picked up pier side by The Siam’s private water limo for a 30-minute private cruise down the Chao Praya river to the hotel.  Received a team welcome dockside and an escort for the afternoon.  Enjoyed an exquisite al-fresco lunch waterside before heading to the spa – the most spectacular spa I’ve seen, perhaps ever, with a private treatment room larger and more classically beautiful and richly appointed than I’ve seen, perhaps ever.  No detail left to chance, the facial, the spa bed, the linens, the room temperature, the music – a complete package of perfection.  I followed with a guided tour of this mecca of urban luxury, and ended with a lovely Pinot Grigio before and during my private sunset journey back.

It was one of those things where intelligent descriptives escape you, and you’re just left with “wow” all day long.
