Designs on Bangkok

Wed October 29, 2014

Who said Southeast Asian furniture and home decor was all about antiques and centuries old relics?  Maybe no one, but if that’s what comes to mind when you consider interior design in this neck of the world, here’s a bit of news.  With clear reverence for their firm cultural roots in time-honored techniques and traditional craft, a new wave of next generation artists, designers and cutting-edge companies confirmed last week on a global stage that the current design scene here is, well, really current.

Here are a few things that caught my eye at the Bangkok International Gift and Housewares Fair …

It’s this attendee’s opinion that the tables stole the show – various species of wood from teak to mango to acacia presented in organic forms and clean styles with a modern sensibility.  The extra large, live edge table on the right, above, sat on two extra large lucite legs!  The mix of this much rusticity with a big dose of unexpected glamour was quite extraordinary (no photos allowed, ahem).

Love the simplicity, substance and mid-century spirit of these solid mango stools, well-suited for almost any room or style.

One of my favorite finds was the pottery from the Isaan villages of Northeastern Thailand.  Such terrific shape, washed colors and interesting patterns, inspired by the kettle drum and ancient Ban Chiang art, this piece has modern-day style and functionality – as a stool or side table, indoors or out – love.

Some interesting and fun lighting options in the form of hemp rope, bamboo, and wood and plastic.

The perfect designer ride – a teak bicycle, with white or copper trim!

And something every good furniture show shouldn’t be without.  It is Thailand…
